Does Catcalling Ever Get Old? What If Girls Catcalled Guys? Wait...They Do!

So, the other day I was on a bit of a longer run and something happened that has not happened in awhile. I got catcalled by someone driving by me. You might think that this type of thing only happens to females, but it doesn't. Another form of catcalling is the honking of a car horn. To those of you who do either of these, thank you for letting me know that you notice me. Even though I (may) find it flattering, I do also find it quite distracting. I know I shouldn't, but I end up taking my eyes off of my path to look to see if it is a friendly face or if it is a complete stranger. That can be dangerous because I could trip and fall and bust my bum, even though that has never happened.

So after sharing the above with you, I have decided to post several things on how to prevent this from happening to you. I am not sure if this is a joke, but I found some of them to be a bit funny and chuckled a few times. Here is part of an article from Gurl.com titled "10 Definitive Ways To Successfully Avoid Getting Catcalled" by Caitlin Corsetti:

1) Don't Go Outside:

"Since we know that simply existing as a woman is cause enough for street harassment, don't go outside. You don't have to venture out of your home in this day and age! I mean, we have the internet and pretty much anything can be delivered right to your door so there's no point to leave. If you don't go outside, you'll never be catcalled again!"

2) If You Do Go Outside, Don't Walk By People:

"If you insist on being an insolent woman and going outside, do not under any circumstances walk past anyone. Why would you do that? Just totally avoid walking near any other person, and you'll be fine."

3) Hire A Bodyguard Or Walk With A Man:

"If you MUST walk by other human beings, hire a bodyguard to come with you and protect you from catcallers. If you can't hire a bodyguard for some reason, make sure you at least walk with someone of the male gender whether it's a friend, boyfriend or your dad. Men won't catcall you in front of other men out of respect for the other dude! Not out of respect for you though. That's ridiculous to assume."

4) Wear Blinders:

"Eye contact is basically an invite to talk to you so if you wear blinders you can see where you're going and avoid being at fault for your own harassment!"

5) Wear A Disguise:

"Whether you decide to wear a mustache and glasses or a dress that transforms into a vending machine, wearing a disguise is a perfect way to avoid harassment. When you wear a disguise, you're protecting yourself from victim blaming. If you don't wear a disguise and something happens to you, it's definitely your fault so..."

6) Wear Noise-Cancelling Headphones:

"If you don't hear anything, you won't know you're being catcalled, right? Invest in some quality noise-cancelling headphones so you will never hear your harassers hurling "compliments" at you."

7) Walk With A Weapon Like A Baseball Bat:

"If you have a visible object to clobber someone with, no one will mess with you. It's called being on the defensive."

8) Act Absolutely Ridiculous:

"As The Daily Show once told us, running down the street while singing or screaming is a pretty solid way to avoid harassment"

9) Travel In Groups:

"Groups are intimidating, and you're much less likely to be harassed when walking with others. But if you are harassed in a group, at least you can share the experience with other women!"

10) Don't Be A Woman:

"This is probably the easiest way to avoid catcalls and instances of street harassment. While some men do get harassed, the percentage is much, much smaller than when you're a woman. Rarely have I encountered a man who was afraid to walk alone down a street. If you want to avoid catcalls, just simply don't be a woman. Piece of cake!"
